CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Justin Thomas has been an impatient golfer. He has watched his best friend in the game, Jordan Spieth, gathered three major championship trophies, while Thomas has come up empty too many times for his liking.

Thomas’s wait ended on Sunday, when he captured his first major title — the P.G.A. Championship at Quail Hollow Club. He closed with a three-under-par 68 for a final score of eight-under 276 to win by two strokes. Three players tied for second: Patrick Reed, Louis Oosthuizen and Francesco Molinari.

It was Thomas’s fifth PGA Tour victory and his fourth this year, his third full year on the tour. His best previous finish in a major was ninth in this year’s United States Open.

Thomas, 24, who was two shots off the lead going into the final round, shot a three-under 68 to close. He said he had been learning patience and how to forge ahead when he struggles.

“I like to think that I’m mature now and I can manage an under-par round when I don’t have my best stuff,” Thomas said. “I think that’s why I feel like I’m ready to win a major championship now versus last year; I probably didn’t have that.”

After shooting a two-over 73 in the opening round of this P.G.A. Championship, he followed with a five-under 66 in the second round to propel himself into contention.

And after bogeys on two of his first three holes on Sunday, he gathered himself for a victory.
